The Job Market Isn’t Broken… But It Is Confusing Right Now
If you talk to job seekers, you hear one thing.
“If jobs are out there, why can’t I find one?”
If you talk to hiring managers, you hear something very different.
“We’re getting flooded with applicants, but we can’t find the right people.”
Welcome to the 2026 job market.
Recent Gallup data highlights something important. About half of employees are watching for or actively seeking a new job, yet only around 28% believe now is a good time to find one.
That tells us everything we need to know.
People want to move, but they are not confident they can.
So what is really going on?
What Is Happening in Today’s Job Market
This is not a typical “hot” or “cold” market. It is something in between.
• Hiring has slowed, but layoffs are not widespread
• Employers are cautious and selective
• Workers are open to change, but hesitant to act
• Many roles exist, but the match between skills and needs is off
Add in the impact of AI, shifting skill demands, and companies trying to do more with fewer people, and you get what some are calling a “wait and see” market.
Or as I like to say, a market where everyone is moving… just a little slower and a lot more carefully.
Advice for Candidates
If you are feeling stuck, you are not alone. But this is not the time to sit back.
Get very clear on your value
You cannot rely on job titles or years of experience alone. Be ready to explain what you actually do, the problems you solve, and the results you deliver.
Upgrade your skills with intention
The gap today is not always talent. It is relevance. Look at what employers are asking for and close those gaps where you can.
Be proactive, not reactive
Applying online is only one piece of the puzzle. Networking, referrals, and direct outreach matter more in a selective market.
Stay patient but persistent
Processes are taking longer. Decisions are slower. That does not mean “no,” it often just means “not yet.”
Advice for Hiring Managers
This market is tricky on your side too. More applicants does not mean better hiring.
Define what “right candidate” really means
If your requirements are too rigid, you may be filtering out strong, adaptable talent. Focus on what truly matters.
Hire for potential and learning ability
The pace of change is too fast to hire only for what someone has already done. The best hires are those who can grow into what you need next.
Improve the candidate experience
In a market where people are hesitant to move, a slow or unclear process pushes great candidates away.
Invest in your current team
Gallup data shows engagement is still low, with only about 31% of employees actively engaged.
Retention and development are just as important as hiring right now.
The Big Takeaway
The job market today is not broken. It is just out of sync.
Candidates are unsure.
Employers are cautious.
And both sides are trying to figure out what comes next.
The opportunity is for those who adjust faster.
Candidates who clearly communicate their value will stand out.
Hiring managers who focus on potential, not perfection, will win the talent they need.
If you are navigating this market, whether hiring or exploring your next move, I am always happy to share perspective and strategy.
