I have a video interview and I want to make sure I do my absolute best. Any tips for me?
Exude confidence and positivity – Make sure you are smiling and seem upbeat. Try to appear confident in yourself without being over confident. They want to see that you believe you can do this job.
Speak slowly and clearly – Don’t speak too quickly because you want them to be able to clearly understand you. Stumbling on your words can be especially confusing for the interviewer when you aren’t in the same room.
Dress to impress – Even though you aren’t going to an office, dress as if you are. Make sure you get up and ready the same as you would for any other in-person interview, this will show you are dedicated to getting this job.
Eye contact – While this may not be easy on camera, make sure you aren’t looking at yourself. It’s human nature to get caught up in how you look, but focus on the camera at the top of the computer. By doing this, it will appear you are making direct eye contact.
Practice makes perfect – Be sure to practice your interview, whether in front of a mirror or with a friend. Be prepared for the usual questions, such as why you want this job. Also have your resume and the job description accessible. It’s never a bad idea to look into the company prior to an interview as well.
Check your equipment – A day or two before your interview, test your laptop, camera, speakers and anything else you may need. Set up your desk an hour or two before so you know everything is ready to go as well.
Clean up and be prepared – If you need water for while you talk, have it ready on the desk. If you have a shelving unit behind you, make sure it is clutter free. Sweep the room for anything that you wouldn’t want to be seen by a future employer. Also, make sure your pets or family are quiet and in another room so there are no disruptions.
